Mrs Higgs Lodge, Hereford.
Change Over days: Monday & Friday, 3 nights Weekend & 4 nights mid week ( 3 nights midweek by arrangement, please call us ).
Take a step back in time, slow things down and engage in a full-on forest immersion with birdsong, starry skies and your own private hot tub.
The cottage was built in 1835 as a hunting Lodge but was occupied by Mrs Higgs until about 60 years ago, after which the forest slowly reclaimed it. Until a few months ago all you could see were the chimney tops through the trees but gentle landscaping has once again revealed this magical little place, and thoughtful restoration has maintained its rustic charm. It now offers an experience of a bygone lifestyle - but with a few modern conveniences thrown in.
It's hard to put the atmosphere of this place into words – it radiates a certain stillness and the absence of bright modern colours and ornaments adds to the feeling that you have stepped back in time. The cottage comfortably sleep 4 people, yet it's not too big for a romantic break, and is a great retreat for anyone needing to be alone for something like a writing project. There is no Wi-Fi here - just wildlife! Set on its own out in woodlands and with its own hot-tub it's certainly a good choice for an 'get away from it all' break.
The entrance hall leads onto a small landing and the two bedrooms upstairs - one double and one twin, with beds made up and ready. Down a ladder style stairs (this might be too steep for small children or carrying babies) there is an open plan kitchen and seating area with a cosy sofa and log burning stove - perfect for winters retreats. The shower and loo are in a wooden outhouse accessed at the back of the lodge, with hot shower, hand basin and flushing loo.
The cottage is too remote to be connected to anything and is totally off grid - electricity is from solar panels, water is pumped up from the original spring well (you don't have to fetch it in a bucket like Mrs Higgs!) although bottled water is provided for drinking. Heating throughout is from wood burning stoves only, a few concessions to modernity such as a gas stove, instant hot water and a flushing loo, means it's not too primitive. Katherine will show you around, light the fires with you and give full instructions on how to use the generator if needed - assistance is on site should you need advice during your stay. N.B. For those times when solar panels can't generate enough energy there's a generator in the wood shed (might need refuelling occasionally) which breaks the silence somewhat - or you can simply fully embrace the 19th Century lifestyle, light the candles and forget about electricity all together.
Set within a 3,000-acre private Estate, remote retreats like this are few
and far between, with privacy, peace, and only deer, owls, badgers and other
forest dwellers as your neighbours. If you love the idea of proper solitude for
a few days this is the place for you.
