Goldfinch Gypsy Wagon, Cardigan.
Unsuitable for children
A quintessential romantic break. Goldfinch is a pretty glamping Gypsy wagon tucked in the corner of a field in the stunning Wye Valley near Rhayader, Mid Wales. When owners Alison and Andre first saw the wagon with its detailed paintings of birds and fruit swags they couldn't resist bringing it home, and after a total refurbishment, it now makes a quirky glamping alternative to their cottages.
N.B. During winter the Wagon and Hut are moved to a sheltered garden next to the pretty stone barns. If you are booking during autumn or spring and being down on the field is important to your stay, please check with us before booking.
Inside the wagon are traditional hand-painted storage cupboards and drawers and a pull out bed which slides back when not in use, although as you have a Shepherd's hut too you might want to leave the bed made up. If tending a log burner isn't your thing, the electric ‘log-stove’ heater will conveniently warm your toes just as well.
Take a pew on the padded seating, listen to birdsong and soak up inspiring views of mountains beyond. I was going to say it's a great spot for a contemplative morning tea, but I can imagine being equally content gazing at starry skies with a mug of hot chocolate. Just perfect, don't you think?
Nearby is a large Shepherd's hut with kitchenette and shower room. Browse through books, tune into your favourite radio station, or enjoy the peace and watch the woodlands birds, it's great little space for chilling out. The shower room's heated towel rail keeps towels snugly warm, whilst underfloor heating maintains a comfortable warmth. We might be out in a field but there is no compromise on facilities or comfort.
Trees and hedging give this little camp a sense of seclusion, all set up around the chiminea, which rather conveniently doubles up as a handy barbecue.
Is a 200-acre organic farm with river Wye frontage, a badger watching hide and ancient woodlands. A couple of fields away is the owner's house and Farmyard barn with a shared laundry room, games room and 'resource room'. You will find information about the local flora and fauna and free wifi. There’s even a CCTV from the badger hide in the woods. If you want to get interactive, there are friendly farm animals, wild places, fantastic walks, excellent bird and badger watching, paddling and swimming in the river Wye.
This is ‘Red Kite country’ bordering the Elan Valley, surrounded by hills and moors of the Cambrian Mountains, the sheer wildness and natural beauty of this area is hard to put into words! The landscape is dotted with traditional family farms, secret valleys and moorlands. Paths and bridleways cross the wild hills, ancient woodlands cling to the slopes, yours to explore either by walking, on horseback, bike or car.
Head in any direction for epic landscapes, Aberystwyth to the west, Hereford and the Marches to the east, Snowdonia to the north, and Brecon Beacons to the south. Rhayader is close, the Elan Valley is a 15 minute walk away over the ridge, or travel a little further to the coast or castles and famous towns like Hay on Wye.
This glamping Gypsy Wagon is a romantic destination for those of us that want to get right into the heart of Wales’s stunning scenery, it's literally right on your doorstep in the Wye Valley.
