Hope Gypsy Wagon, Dorset.
A romantic Gypsy caravan holiday in the Dorset countryside ~ 'Hope'
is an original 1927 bow top wagon who many years ago was used by
families to travel the countryside. Fortunately for us she is now
available to transport us back in time.
Located in a small meadow with 3 other huts behind a Retreat Center she has been lovingly refurbished by local artisans and artists using hand printed fabric and artwork. A genuine escape from the madding crowd she has purposely been kept off-grid ... soft lighting emits from candles evoking an enchanting sense of days gone by.
Hope is a pocket-sized labyrinth of discovery! With quirky furnishing and decorative touches. The pull-out bed sleeps 2 adults and there's a small cabin bed underneath for 1 child if required. Hope now has a gorgeous wood-burning stove for cosy nights in!
Simplicity rules here, a campfire for cooking, storm kettle for boiling water, a sideboard and rather welcome comfy chair... there is something quite delicious about being able to sit in a really comfortable chair in the middle of a field! There is also an outside seating area, as well as a hammock for you to laze in while reading a good book or listening to birdsong - bliss!
Bathroom facilities are simple & off grid, the compost loo is about 20 meters to the left of the wagon and a rustic hut 20 meters behind the wagon has a hot shower and hand basin (shared with other huts).
The land and fields are part of a private retreat site where you can treat yourself to a yoga (£30) or massage (£45) session with Bryony, or a meditation session (£30), foraging walk (£30), surfing (£35) and spoon carving lessons (£30).
Dorset is a stunning county, with verdant countryside and three-quarters of the coastline classed as a World Heritage Site featuring prominent landforms such as Lulworth Cove, the Isle of Portland, Chesil Beach and Durdle Door. This Jurassic coastline is famous worldwide for fossils and dramatic scenery and is the location for the filming of 'Broadchurch'. A 30 minute walk gets you to Charmouth with its lush beach, fish & chips, or take a 10 minute drive to Lym Regis and its mini aquarium, go crabbing or admire the famous cob.
You're also in one of the best foodies places in the UK! Bridport holds a Sunday food market, check out Lyme Bay winery for local wines and cider, and the Felicities Farm Shop 5 minutes away. For eating out try the River Cottage Canteen in Axminister which is is excellent, Hix Restaurant overlooking the Lyme Regis bay serves delicious seafood. There are so many beautiful places to eat whilst gazing over the the stunning coastline - Bryony says let her know the occasion and budget and she will recommend somewhere!
As you can see, there's plenty to do and see on this glamping holiday near the gorgeous Dorset coast.
