In America there is a non-profit group taking a fantastic approach to helping those in a homeless situation in San Francisco- with a new bus that allows them to take a shower. While you and I are lucky enough to enjoy beautiful glamping Sussex breaks, yurt holidays and other such luxuries some aren’t as fortunate. But this is a good news story to make you feel good inside, so don’t worry.
The bus used to transport the public on a daily basis and when it was retired the organisation laid claim to the bus and went on to kit it out with two fully private bathrooms. The service doesn’t end there as hot showers, clean toilets, shampoo, soap and towels all completely free of charge. It’s great to know that people are so compassionate to others and the founder of the non-profit Lava Mae Mobile Shower Bus said, when asked about the bus, that she wanted to return a sense of dignity to those living on the streets.
Additionally Lava Mae said that because the bus is mobile, it can therefore travel around to reach homeless people who reside throughout the city. In turn, by having a facility on wheels eradicates the potential for rent hikes and evictions in a city where the rental prices for properties are high.
To make the bus into its fully refurbished state cost $75,000 and the city allows Lava Mae to use nearby fire hydrants for water. The money provided to pay for the refurbishment came from private donations, including a donation from technology giant Google.
