It seems like just yesterday that we were celebrating World Environment Day 2015! But in just two days’ time it will be a full 12 months as we’re here to mark the event for 2016 on Sunday June 5th.

Beginning in 1974, and now celebrated in more than 100 countries, WED is an occasion seen by the United Nations as the most important day for promoting worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. The organisers of WED like to see the day as a way of paying homage to all that have supported the cause, a sort of ‘people’s day’.

This year, as with every year, there is a theme. The themes have a focus around a certain issue that is environmentally-focussed and 2016 is themed on the illegal trade in wildlife, with ‘Go Wild for Life’ as the theme’s slogan. There is an annual host, and this year Angola has proudly taken the mantle.

There are a number of notable names who are behind the initiative once again this year that some of you who go on quirky holidays (UK-based) with us here at Quality Unearthed may have heard of. Yaya Toure, the Manchester City & Ivory Coast footballer, Don Cheadle, the actor known most recently for his role in the Marvel superhero films, and Ian Somerhalder, a keen environmentalist and actor who starred in the series ‘Lost’, have all actively been involved in this year’s campaign.

In 2015, WED recorded a grand total of 2,861 registered activities that included 1.26 million people participating on a global scale. If you would like get involved this year, there is a helpful guide, available here at www.wed2016.com/content/what-you-can-do. Once you have an idea, you can register your activity, which will be featured on the WED Community Map and help to inspire others here www.wed2016.com/register.
