With Christmas dinner consumed, presents opened and family arguments resolved, people are now beginning to look ahead to the fast-approaching new year, and the ways in which they can better themselves. While many opt for super strict regimes that are likely to last a week, or maybe two, we believe that a more effective way to change your behaviour in 2019 is a lifestyle change, such as pledging to a greener way of life. We’ve listed some tips and pointers of simple alterations that may not make a huge impact on your day-to-day life, but will work wonders for the planet.
When it comes to bills of any kind, opt for a paperless alternative. Emails are a much greener option and will not only help save the trees, but also eases the strain of the transportation of letters.
Reduce Your Time in the Shower
Cut down your shower time. While your rendition of Grease Lightning might be nothing short of fabulous, you don’t have to finish the song before you exit the shower! In fact, sometimes the acoustics sound even better when your towelling down. Well, while we can’t guarantee that, shorter showers will help save the planet and your water bill at the same time. It’s a win win!
Walk, Bike or Bus
Walk or bike. Bus or carpool. Only drive your own car if it is absolutely necessary. Not only will this help those with health and fitness goals in 2019, but those saving their money will also see a reduction in fuel costs!
Say No to Spam
Say no to spam mail. Contact the companies of any spam mail you receive and ask to be removed from the list. Thousands of trees are needlessly destroyed each year for junk mail that is unlikely to see a world away from the paper bin or fire. It’s outdated, and quite frankly in this day and age, unacceptable.
Turn off your electrical items when you aren’t using them. That should be a no-brainer, but even when your computer is off but still plugged in, it requires power – just for that little red dot to let you know it’s there if you need it. Again, unnecessary, and will save you money in the long run!
Collect Rain Water for Plants
Put containers outside when it rains – and when you live in the UK, boy does it rain often – and use this water on plants during dry spells. This is also a great reminder to water the garden for the scatterbrains amongst us!
Embrace Meat-Free Mondays
Embrace Meat-free Mondays. While not everyone is ready to cut meat out of their diet altogether, by cutting down for just one or two days a week will still lessen your impact on the environment. According to World Wild Life, it takes about 750 litres of water to produce 1 kilogram of wheat, whilst it takes 100,00 litres of water to produce 1 kilogram of beef – a huge difference.
Opt for Reusable
Reusable cups and bags are essentials items for households all over the country in 2019. Most good coffee shops will offer a slight discount upon you providing your own cup, and save yourself at least 5p every time you visit the shops.
Invest in Quality
Treat yourself. You may not need reminding to do so, but good quality items will last a lot longer than cheaper, poorly-made counterparts and are well worth the investment when it comes to both style and the environment.
Upcycle old clothes. Haven’t you heard? Vintage is well and truly in, and one of the best ways you can be mindful of the environment and wear inspired, unique creations is by upcycling the clothes yourself.
Keep on top of your work and social affairs via a digital calendar. With the wealth of technology available at your fingertips, there’s no excuse to keep physical calendars.
Most big publications are now available in digital format, so opt for a tablet version to decrease paper waste. Pages not sticking together and falling apart are a plus!
Ditch the Dryer
Ditch the dryer. Seriously, they are loud, inconvenient and a waste of space. If you’re paying to heat your home, make the most of that heat and hang clothes out to dry; chances are you have other garments you can wear in the mean time!
Buy a fan during the winter time. Fans circulate whatever air they are exposed to, and if the house is heated, this is a great way to spread warm air. We are a big fan of this life hack.
Take a Break from Consumerism
Take a break from consumerism. Today’s consistent and ever-increasing demand for ‘stuff’ is exhausting, and completely and utterly unnecessary. Cut fast fashion, and try to fix or upcycle old clothes instead of writing them off completely. Your bank balance will appreciate this avoidance of the high street, and you’ll be surprised at how little you miss those ‘essential’ buys.
