In recent news, we have seen that there are plans to cut down on non-recyclable materials as well as the banning of microbeads being used in products. This is a great way to kick off 2018 and has made a lot of people reconsider their buying habits. However, there is a current trend which is becoming more popular which is those who are trying to save the planet going completely zero waste.

If you have never heard of zero waste, it means setting a new goal for how we live in the world which aims to reduce what we throw away in landfills and incinerators to zero. Those who are zero waste reduce what they need, reuse as much as they can, send little to be recycled, and compost what they cannot.

It is important to remember, that it is difficult to change your habits straight away, so instead, you can take smaller baby steps, as by doing this, it can really help you adapt.

Where to Start?

First of all, you should think about your options and see if this is something you can try to do. Of course, there is no right or wrong way when it comes to becoming zero waste; it is all about becoming aware of how much waste your household produces and then reducing your consumption wherever possible.

You can start anywhere from ditching those plastic bags at the supermarket to asking for no straw when you buy a drink. Don’t let only being able to do a little prevent you from doing anything, as all of these little things add up to impact massively!

When starting out on your zero waste journey, we are sure that you will still have a lot of products in your home which has packaging that has to be recycled or thrown in your bin. As being zero waste means that you produce no waste at all, so refusing the unnecessary packaging as much as possible, you don’t want to start by chucking out food and goods which can still be used.


Sometimes it can be hard to know where to even begin, but as we have said before, it is good to try a do a little if you can’t do a lot! We have put together some tips which can help you get started:

Of course, walking into your local supermarket with a jar which you are looking to fill up isn’t really doable. However, many independent shops can have a self-service type approach where you can simply fill up your own jar.

The first step of going zero waste is being aware of the problem; which is that the world produces too much rubbish.

Step two is phasing everything out, which means using up everything that you already have.

Step three is making simple swaps, so as you’re phasing out old items, look to replace some of them with reusable items.

The last step is all about having a lot of patience. If you follow a lot of eco-friendly bloggers or even have come across a zero waste website, everyone will look they are really thriving but it does take a while to adapt to this type of lifestyle.
